Do we need another dental school?
Article Abstract:
Many dental educators question the need for a new dental school at Nova Southeastern University in south Florida. It will be the first new dental school in the past 10 years. Most of the funding for the private school will have to come from tuition, but data from other dental schools reveal that only 64% of the annual cost of educating students comes from tuition. At the full complement of students, the school could spend $5 million more than it takes in. Many leaders in the profession had no chance to contribute to this initiative.

`I think I can...I thought I could...I did.'(Editorial)
Article Abstract:
On October 7, 1999, the US House of Representatives passed the Patient Access to Responsible Care Act. This bill, which was supported by the American Dental Association, gives patients many rights. They include the right to choose their healthcare provider, the right to join a point-of-service plan outside the network, and the right to emergency care without prior approval. It would also eliminate gag clauses and allow patients to sue their health plan. One of the sponsors of the bill was Rep Charlie Norwood (R-Ga), a dentist.

Facing up to phobia
Article Abstract:
Dentists who are afraid to treat HIV-infected patients should consider getting treatment for their phobia. Infection control procedures have almost completely eliminated the risk of acquiring HIV from a patient. Nevertheless, many dentists are still afraid to treat these patients, despite the fact that the American Dental Association's Code of Professional Conduct states that no dentist should refuse an HIV-infected patient. Research shows that 90% of phobias can be successfully treated.
